KCC supports education to enhance the capacity to respond to disinformation for middle and high school students nationwide in collaboration with the Community Media Foundation.
Students participating in the ‘Youth Fact-Checking Class’ will have an opportunity to participate in the ‘Fact-Checking National Competition.’
KCC Vice Chairman Lee Sang-in emphasizes the importance of fact-checking education by visiting educational sites.
Vice Chairman Lee Sang-in of the Korea Communications Commission (KCC, Chairman Kim Hong-il) visited a 2024 ‘Youth Fact-Checking Class,’ which was held at Sungbo Middle School in Sillim-dong, Gwanak-gu, Seoul on Monday, March 25.
Since 2021, the KCC has been operating the ‘Youth Fact-Checking Class,’ which visits middle and high schools nationwide through the Community Media Foundation (CMF, Chief Director Cho Han-kyu) located in each metropolitan city and province in collaboration with the CMF to help young people independently discern the truthfulness and manipulation of information and use it correctly.
This year, through open competition, a total of 40 schools (27 middle schools and 13 high schools) were selected as recipients of support for the ‘Youth Fact-Checking Class.’ The selected schools will conduct approximately 14 sessions (28 hours) of education on understanding the information environment, characteristics of disinformation, and understanding and practicing fact-checking, considering each school’s academic schedule until December of this year.
Students participating in the ‘Youth Fact-Checking Class’ will have priority to participate in the ‘Fact-Checking National Competition,’ which evaluates and awards the entire process from selecting fact-checking topics to deriving results. Additionally, they will receive mentoring from experts, such as professors and journalists when they participate in the national competition.
After observing the educational site on this day and participating in the experience using the ‘Media Sharing Bus’ with students, Vice Chairman Lee Sang-in said, “Recently, social and economic damages caused by malicious and deceptive disinformation using AI and deep fakes are becoming increasingly serious.” “As the enhancement of critical evaluation and utilization of information is being proposed as a fundamental solution, we intend to support fact-checking education to make it accessible to all citizens,” he added.
In addition to the ‘Youth Fact-Checking Class,’ the KCC and the CMF plan to allocate a budget of 561 million won this year to strengthen the capacity to respond to disinformation for all citizens and support tailored fact-checking education for target groups, such as children, college students, seniors, teachers, and instructors. They also plan to proactively develop educational materials and content.
