Discussion includes reducing household communications expenses and increasing user convenience in communications services
Agreed on making efforts to expand benefits for the citizens
Chairman Kim Hong-il of the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) had his inaugural meeting with three major telecom companies (CEO Ryu Young-sang of SKT, CEO Kim Young-shub of KT, and CEO Hwang Hyun-sik of LGU+) and mobile device manufacturers (President Roh Tae-moon of Samsung Electronics and Vice President Ahn Cheol-hyun of Apple Korea) to discuss various communications policy issues, such as reducing household communications expenses and increasing convenience in communications services on Friday, March 22 at Press Center in Seoul.
Chairman Kim stated that the expectations and demand of the citizens toward communications services are high and it is necessary to stabilize the livelihood of people due to high inflation and high interest rates and especially asked for sincere cooperation of business operators regarding the “conversion support fund” introduced to lessen household communications expense burden and promote the competition.
The meeting also addressed diverse ways to allow overall users to enjoy benefits, including expanding publicly announced subsidies, introducing mid to low-priced plans, and releasing mid to low-priced mobile devices.
In addition, the methods to enhance user convenience in communications services, such as the transmission qualification certification system, which is planned to be implemented in the first half of the year by telecom companies to reduce illegal spam messages, and the spam message filtering service developed by the three telcos and Samsung Electronics.
These improvements will strengthen user protection from damages like phishing by advancing illegal spam message-blocking technology in production, transmission, and reception.
Moreover, other measures to protect users’ interests in communications services, including communications dispute mediation, strengthened handling of complaints, and user protection of global business operators were also discussed.
The executive leaders said, “We have put efforts to meet the government’s policies to reduce household communications expenses and protect users as communications services have a great impact on people’s livelihood.” “We will strive to fortify user protection measures discussed today while working on service innovation and growth,” they added.
They also agreed this year will be the first year of full-out AI service development and that they should center around user protection, including through making adverse effect prevention systems from the service development stage, while reinforcing service competitiveness. In addition, they pledged to cooperate to introduce systems to protect users from AI services.
Chairman Kim stated, “I request you to make sure that there is no negligence in supporting the vulnerable, identity verification work, and location information protection as well so that the citizens can stay secure.” “We will proactively support Korea’s communications sector to develop in a better direction by reflecting the good opinions presented in today’s meeting when establishing policies in the future,” he added.
Meanwhile, Chairman Kim visited Korea Telecom Hyehwa to look into major communications facilities and communications network status before the meeting on the day.
