Increase support to install replay facilities for disaster broadcasting at roads, rails, tunnels, and subway stations
The Korea Communications Commission (KCC, Chairman Kim Hong-il) has announced an expanded initiative to support the installation of disaster broadcasting relay facilities in tunnels and subway stations, aiming to swiftly deliver disaster information and protect lives as various calamities and disasters frequently appear.
According to Article 40-3 of the Framework Act on Broadcasting Communications Development, the owners, occupants, and managers of roads, railways, and subways shall install relay facilities necessary for the smooth reception of disaster broadcasting services in areas with broadcasting reception issues, such as tunnels and underground spaces.
Based on a complete enumeration survey conducted by the KCC last year on over 4,960 tunnels nationwide, FM radio reception was inadequate in approximately 68.2% (3,380) of the surveyed tunnels, while terrestrial mobile multimedia broadcasting (terrestrial DMB) was inadequate in about 68.4% (3,400) of the tunnels.
The KCC provided technical support consulting to address reception issues with organizations like the Korea Expressway Corporation last year. Additionally, they supported the installation of around 20 disaster broadcasting relay facilities. This year, the commission plans to significantly expand this effort by supporting the installation of approximately 60 relay facilities.
Chairman Kim emphasized the importance of improving the disaster broadcasting reception environment, stating, "We hope that the installation support for disaster broadcasting relay facilities becomes a key measure for effective disaster response."
