More than 300, including top global OTT companies, suggesting directions for the future of Korea's OTT industry The Korea Communications Commission (KCC, Chairman Lee Dong-kwan) hosts the 2023 global OTT Forum at The Ambassador Seoul - A Pullman Hotel in Jangchung-dong on Thursday, November 16. The forum, which marks its second anniversary this year, is a venue for international exchange for coexistence and collaboration, featuring top global OTT companies, such as Netflix, Viu (Hong Kong), DAZN (England), Canal+ (France), and U-NEXT (Japan), as well as domestic companies, such as Tving and Wavve. The event, which consists of a total of six sessions, including keynote speeches and a special session, is designed to support domestic OTT operators' successful international expansion and global network establishment under the theme of "Streaming Beyond Imagination." In the forum, the participants can seek directions for coexistence and collaboration thourgh various cooperation between OTT companies and content business operators as the forum shares success strategies of top global OTT platforms and the current dynamics in the global OTT industry, which is ever-getting fiercer. The event kicks off with a keynote speech from Kang Dong-han, Vice President of Content at Netflix Korea, focusing on global cooperation in the OTT market. Following this, Janice Lee, CEO of Viu, Southeast Asia's leading OTT service, presents an overview of the current state of the Asian OTT market and outlines development plans. Subsequently, Choi Joo-hee, CEO of Tving, the largest domestic OTT platform, delivers a keynote speech on the future of online streaming and content. *Viu is Southeast Asia's largest OTT platform, providing services in 16 countries, encompassing regions such as Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and South Africa. As a special session, John Gleasure, Executive Vice Chairman of DAZN*, an OTT platform specializing in global sports content such as FIFA and F1, presents the competitiveness of sports content that has emerged as a new growth engine for the OTT industry. The speaker is expected to provide a new perspective on sports content in the OTT market since DAZN has achieved 3.59 trillion won in sales as of last year. *DAZN is a global OTT platform dedicated to sports, holding broadcast rights of events such as F1, FIFA, NBA, and UFC." In Session 1, Vivek Couto from MPA*, a global research company, predicts the growth potential of the OTT market. Moving on to Session 2, Tenshin Tsutsumi, representing U-NEXT**, the sole domestic OTT company in Japan operating with a surplus, outlines the current state of the Japanese OTT market and shares the company's success strategy. *MPA is a prominent global OTT research firm specializing in consulting and research within the media and communications sectors, centering around the Asia-Pacific region. **U-NEXT is Japan's leading OTT platform, holding the position as the country's sole platform to achieve a surplus. In Session 3, Choi Byung-wook, Senior Vice President of Canal+, a prominent French media group with a presence in 31 countries across Europe and Africa, discusses Canal+'s overseas expansion. Following that, in Session 4, Kim Ki-ju, Senior Executive Director of Hankook Research, analyzes media usage behavior in overseas countries. *Canal+ is France's leading global media group, having expanded its presence to more than 30 countries, including regions in Europe, Africa, and Asia. In Session 5, Park Geun-hee, CEO of KOCOWA*, the only Korean OTT service that has achieved a surplus after expanding overseas, shares insights into K-OTT's successful strategy for international expansion. Concluding the event, a roundtable discussion focusing on the development of the Korean OTT industry takes place. Professor Sung Dong-kyoo of Chung-Ang University, Corporate Relations General Director Jong-hwan of Tving, Team Leader Noh Dong-hwan of Wavve, Professor Lee Sung-min of Korea National Open University, and Producer Jang Ho-gi, known for producing Netflix's 'Physical: 100,' discuss various development strategies after a presentation by Professor Sung Dong-kyoo. Moon Chul-Soo, Chairman of Korea OTT Forum, moderates the discussion. *KOCOWA is an overseas platform established in 2017 by three domestic terrestrial broadcasters in the U.S. It has expanded its presence to over 30 countries in America, including the U.S. Vice Chairman Lee Sang-in said in his opening speech, "At a time when the media industry environment is changing rapidly, the OTT industry will continue to develop when we break down the boundaries between countries and platforms, and everyone work together," adding, "I hope that through today's event, domestic OTT companies will spread to overseas markets with K-content so that Korea becomes a global media powerhouse." ### The Korea Communications Commission |
