The Korea Communications Commission (KCC, Chairman Lee Dong-kwan) hosts the International Broadcasting Co-production Conference 2023 themed Local Insights, Global Outlooks: Sharing Asian Stories with the World, on Thursday, September 22, at The-K Hotel Seoul. The KCC and the Korea Information Society Development Institute host the IBCC annually to facilitate co-production among countries and garner international attention on K-content, and this year’s conference is the 8th since 2016. The conference consists of the keynote speech, the special session of the country of honor, the Asia sessions, the experts roundtable, international co-production awards, and awardees’ presentations. Park Jeong-hoon, the president of SBS is giving a keynote speech titled Through Localization of Hallyu: The Co-Production Strategy of SBS. Indonesia, which marks the 50th anniversary of the tie with Korea, participates in the special session of the country of honor. Indonesia’s KPI chairman Ubaidillah gives a congratulatory remark, and the vice chairman Mohamad Reza and the secretary general of ATVSI Gilang Iskandar give topic presentations. As the last speaker of the special session, Dr. Joannes Ekaprasetya Tandjung is giving a presentation titled From K-Wave to I-Wave: 50 years Friendship Indonesia-Korea on behalf of the Indonesian ambassador to Korea. In Asia Session 1, Mika Kanaya (Japan, Head of International Content Development of NHK) presents “Four Decades of International Co-Production Between Asia and Japan: Why Our Stories Matter,” and Nini Binti Yusof (Malaysia, CEO of Media Prima TV Networks & Primeworks Studios) presents “Global Co-Production for Branded Entertainment Content,” followed by a discussion moderated by Professor Yim Jung-su of Seoul Women’s University. In Asia Session 2, Dhanasak Hoonarak (Thailand, the chief business development officer of Workpoint Group) presents “The Benefit of Co-Production Between Asian Countries and How to Tailor,” Nguyen Thi Minh Ha (Vietnam, VTV producer) presents “Co-Production ? A Key to Content Diversity within VTV,” and Erkhembileg Baatarsuren (Mongolia, head of the production department of NTV Broadcasting) presents “Media Content Co-Production: Uniting Mongolia, Korea, and Asia,” followed by a discussion moderated by Professor Chung Yoon-kyung of Soonchunhyang University. Following that, the awardees* demonstrate their production procedures and experiences, and lastly, experts from home and abroad attend the roundtable, exchanging difficulties in co-production and ways to promote it. *Grand Prize: Aesthetics of Fermentation (Mokpo MBC), Top Prize: Tish Tash (Studio Gale), and Excellence Prize: A Long Way to Ithaca (Bassim Media) Vice Chairman Lee Sang-in of the KCC said, “The K-content is gaining worldwide recognition as well-made content, and this is the result of the dedicated efforts of many individuals involved in content planning, production, and international distribution. I hope today’s conference contributes to the quantitative and qualitative improvement in co-produced broadcasting content.
