Chairman Han Sang-hyuk inspects Covid-19 quarantine measures of Namsan Transmitter and Relay Station

On July 22 at 14:30, Korea Communications Commission(KCC) Chairman Han Sang-hyuk visited the Namsan transmitter and relay station and maintenance facilities of the three main terrestrial broadcasters and YTN to directly inspect Covid-19 quarantine measures implemented on-site.

The Namsan transmitter and relay station is home to facilities which provide the digital TV and UHDTV services of terrestrial broadcasting to Seoul and northern Gyeonggi province. Thus, it is a critical location in providing reliable service to Seoul metropolitan area viewers.

During his visit, Chairman Han Sang-hyuk reiterated the seriousness of the situation, referring to a case where production was halted on a broadcast program due to a cast member testing positive for Covid-19. He also asked for meticulous maintenance to prevent any quarantine-related blind spots in this important transmission facility.

Chairman Han also stressed the importance of quarantine management because although the transmission and relay facilities are segregated from the N Seoul Tower tourism areas, their close proximity to each other makes contact with non-staff members unavoidable.

Furthermore, he requested each of the broadcasters to, as their circumstances allowed, strengthen a backup system for personnel and facilities in case of emergency situations, in accordance with the “Guidelines on Broadcast Production Relating to Covid-19,” which the government announced in January.

Chairman Han also offered encouragement to the broadcasting staff who have worked tirelessly for an extended period of time throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. He also reiterated the importance of being “aware of the gravity of this situation, where all of our effort can be undone in a single moment.” He further asked staff to “spare no effort in upholding maintenance in preparation for disaster situations.”

Additionally, Chairman Han requested that everyone “do their utmost to maintain the safety and security of the facilities in consideration of the frequent typhoons and concentrated heavy rainfalls that occur in July and August.”
