Caution Against Deceptive Sales Through False and Exaggerated Advertisements Urges Market Stabilization to Telcos, Enhances Monitoring The Korea Communications Commission (KCC, Chairman Kim Hong-il) asked the public to be cautious about the potential for mobile phone fraud through false and exaggerated advertisements, ahead of the release of Samsung's Galaxy S24 series on January 30. Some sales stores, so-called "shrine stores," underhandedly conduct online sales through channels such as online communities, blogs, and Naver Band, claiming that they are selling the latest smartphones at a low cost. In fact, they may deceive users by explaining a discount from affiliated credit card companies or a discounted service charge applied when agreeing on the use of services in accordance with the terms and conditions of the use. Moreover, cases may arise where users are induced to sign up for high-rate plans or additional services under the pretense of receiving free phones, smartwatches, tablets, and the like. To prevent damages from such deceptive sales tactics, it is crucial for users to carefully verify discount conditions, remaining installment payments, and other details when presented with unrealistically low purchase amounts. The KCC has urged Korea's three telcos to stabilize the market and prevent user harm caused by subscriber attraction competitions around the time of new phone releases. Additionally, it plans to operate a special period of market stabilization for three weeks, from January 19 to February 8, strengthening market monitoring and on-site inspections. ### The Korea Communications Commission |
