Lee Sang-in, a standing commissioner of the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) held a meeting with Joel Kaplan, Meta’s vice president of global policy at the Gwacheon Government Complex on Friday, June 9. Meta is a company that offers Facebook, the world's largest social media platform, along with services such as Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus. The meeting was held to explain the KCC's policy direction on protecting artificial intelligence and extended reality (metaverse) users, strengthening algorithm transparency, and preventing illegal information distribution on social network services and to hear about Meta's efforts to create a safe digital use environment and develop a domestic industrial ecosystem. Lee expressed his appreciation to Mr. Kaplan for showing interest in the KCC’s new policies for safeguarding digital users during Yoon's administration. Lee also emphasized the need for further efforts to combat issues such as information on illegal finances, gambling, and drugs, and the distribution of digital sex crime content, which have emerged as significant concerns in Korea recently. In response, Vice President Kaplan explained Meta's efforts, such as publishing a transparency report for compliance with domestic laws and preparing a code of conduct for developers. In addition, Meta said it is aware of and will consider the Korean government's concerns about polarizing public opinion, forming prejudice against certain groups, and producing fake news using deepfake technology when developing services of artificial intelligence and extended reality. The KCC and Meta will continue to communicate and strengthen policy cooperation to protect domestic users. |
