On October 29, Korea Communications Commission Vice Chairman Kim Hyun met His Excellency Eric TEO, Singapore Ambassador to Korea and discussed measures for exchange and cooperation as well as key issues in the area of broadcasting and communications.
In 2007, Korea and Singapore signed the Arrangement on Co-production of Broadcasting Programmes*, and in 2021 the KCC provided financial support for production costs of a co-produced program between Singapore’s A+E Networks Asia and Korea’s KBS and MBC, continuously building a foundation for cooperation in the area of broadcasting.
* When financial and creative contribution conditions of at least 20% are met, the program can be given national treatment and other filming benefits
Vice Chairman Kim explained that the KCC has visited government agencies in Singapore every year in the past, illustrating the vibrant exchange between the two countries. She asked for the Singaporean government’s continued interest so that bilateral cooperation would not be overlooked during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Additionally, Singapore is fourth behind Japan, the US and Taiwan in terms of exports of Korean terrestrial broadcasting programming, and Korean dramas and variety shows are being shown on a pay-TV channel in Singapore.
Vice Chairman Kim commented, “I understand that after Korean terrestrial broadcasting content entered the Singaporean market, now viewers can watch programs within 24 hours after they air in Korea. I’d like to thank Singapore for its great interest in Korean broadcasting content.” She went on to emphasize the hope for more cultural exchange and mutual understanding through broadcasting programming.
