Title KCC supports audience-participating program supporting business as multimedia, multi-channel convergence environment spreads

Korea Communications Commission (chairman See Joong Choi) will support audience-participating programs that broadcasts programs which have been produced by the audience themselves to encourage their participation in broadcasting and also support the reflection of audience’s suggestions obtained through media-related researches in policy proposals to create a broadcasting environment that permits the audience to relax and enjoy the content.

Overall, KCC is planning to spend 3.36 billion won to fund audience-participating program supporting business in 2009. Audience-participating program supporting business involves broadcasting audience-produced programs on handicapped people, migrant workers and other issues concerning the less privileged class or on special local culture and customs, and it has been expanding its support every year since ’01 to encourage audience participation in broadcasting and its public benefits.

Furthermore, audience rights and interests enhancement supporting business carries out researches on broadcasting environment that the government cannot conduct directly and brings in the whole national audience group in proposing policies related to audience rights and interests. It has been establishing itself as a frame for supporting researches on audience’s various broadcasting environment in the midst of heightening broadcasting competitiveness and commercialization due to the orientation towards multimedia and multi-channel.

This year, audience-participating program supporting business will expand out from compulsory KBS to satellite broadcasting, local terrestrial broadcaster and System Operator, and audience group supporting business plans to spread out appropriately in each field and district and create more opportunities for new groups to participate.

Audience rights and interests enhancement supporting group will conduct researches on broadcasting environment such as channel schedule for each broadcast medium, cost and other user complaints by directing the study at the audience group at a national level. At the same time, it plans to promote business in the policy area by forming consortium with relevant academic circles and universities to propose policies for the enhancement of audience rights and interests.

KCC will form expert selection committee for each area of business recruitment, business descrption and broadcasting criticism, broadcasting law and accounting related to audience-participating program supporting business and audience rights and interests enhancement supporting business and select appropriate businesses in mid-February of 2009.
