The Korean broadcasting and communications industry is recognized internationally for its high competitive power. This is proven through the DOI (Digital Opportunity Index) presented by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union), which shows in 1st place for 3 consecutive years, from 2005 to 2007. DOI is evaluated largely by comprehending the levels of digital opportunity, infrastructures, and status of usage, and Korea was ranked high in all aspects. Moreover, Korea is ranked high in the area of technological infrastructure in the World Competitiveness Ranking announced by the IMD (International Institute for Management Development). Korea was shown to have gained outstanding scores in areas such as the number of broadband network subscribers per 1,000 people and broadband fees. On the other hand, Korea is attempting to maintain its international competitive power in the era of digital convergence based on such advanced network infrastructures and Koreans'rapid consumption of services. Digital convergence refers to the phenomenon of a creation of a new industry/market/service as the boundaries between the existing industries collapse due to the development of information technology based on digital technology. Korea is maintaining a high international competitive capacity in the area of broadcasting and communications convergence services, which is represented by DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) and IPTV, and is also releasing a wide range of convergence products such as the TPS (Triple Play Service, TV + Internet + Landline Phone) and QPS (Quadruple Play Service, TV + Internet + Landline Phone + Cell Phone) on the market. In addition, the popularization of a wide range of wired/wireless connection services, in which wired and wireless internets are integrated, has been successful in Korea. Korea is also achieving commercialization of services which integrate information technology and conventional industries, such as mobile banking, telematics, u-learning and u-healthcare ahead of the world. Korea has established the KCC (Korea Communications Commission) by integrating the information technology institutions and broadcasting institutions of the past, and is endeavoring to actively prepare itself for the era of digital convergence and maintain international competitive power in the field of broadcasting and communications. |
