Chairman Choi See-joong of the Korea Communications Commission met with John Chambers of Cisco Systems, which is the world’s largest company in networking, who is visiting Korea, on the 14th, and exchanged views on Cisco’s plan to invest in IT in Korea. Chairman Choi said to Chairman Chambers, “Korea has many areas for cooperation with Cisco because Korea has an excellent IT infrastructure and workforce as well as a high reception desire for new internet services and Cisco is pursuing projects to create a new future based on IT technology such as an ‘intellectual city’.” He highly welcomed Cisco’s present project in Korea. To this, Chairman Chambers emphasized, “The project planned in Korea will not stop at establishing a research center, but is a project to develop solutions to apply in actual next generation business in order to build a future high-tech city (u-city) by combining IT technology from the beginning of the construction of a new city from the perspective of actual IT business.” And Chairman Chambers revealed that it is Cisco’s plan to advance into the global market by developing the R&D service and building and verifying the Incheon Free Economic Zone as a reference model for new urban development projects all over the world. Also, Mr. Chambers revealed, “We will create a fund for prospective companies in the IT field, enhance our investment in programs to finance IT companies we have previously pursued and to foster competent people for networking.” Mr. Choi asked Cisco to actively cooperate with Korean companies in investing in Korea and its support using its technological capacity, brand power and global network to enable Korean IT companies to advance in foreign countries together with Cisco when the present project is exported worldwide. Further, Mr. Choi mentioned that foreign companies promised to invest in IT in Korea, but stopped short at holding events and expressed his hope that with Cisco, a good outcome would come out. Mr. Chambers has led the growth of Cisco to thirty-fold since his taking office as its CEO in 1995 and is managing a low-carbon urban development program (Clinton Global Initiative) with the former U.S. president, Bill Clinton, to pursue eco-friendly urban development in major cities (including Seoul) worldwide. He is internationally acknowledged and is known to be pursuing a meeting with President Lee Myung-bak during his visit to Korea as the CEO of Cisco.
