KCC Chairman meets with Epic Games CEO and Match Group Senior Vice President

On November 17, Korea Communications Commission (KCC) Chairman Han Sang-hyuk met with Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney and Match Group Senior Vice President Mark Buse via teleconference.

This meeting was arranged following a request from Epic Games and Match Group. During the meeting, the KCC Chairman explained Korea's policies for the establishment of a fair digital platform ecosystem, including the app market and mutual development, and listened to opinions from Epic Games and Match Group.

Chairman Han emphasized, “now is the time to explore win-win measures for platform operators and users alike for the sustainable development of the online ecosystem and enhancement of user convenience.”

“The amended law prohibits app market operators forcing certain payment methods; it regulates the most representative violation of rights and interest that occur in the app market, Once it takes root and there is service competition between operators such as app market operators, app developers and payment systems, it will ultimately lead to increased convenience for both users and creators.”

The chairman expressed his commitment to the new policies, commenting “We will strictly enforce the law so that the proud accomplishment of Korea, which was the first country to implement app market regulations, is not diminished, and so we can create real changes that can be felt by all members of the ecosystem.”

Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, said that Korea has taken a leading role for a fair platform ecosystem, and expressed his hope that the KCC’s commitment can be realized and become a successful model example for the rest of the world.

Marc Buse, Vice President of Match Group, added that he expects that Korea's regulatory actions on the app market will have a global impact, and will serve as a basis for regulatory policies being pursued in many other countries.

Chairman Han said, “the role of companies such as Epic Games and Match Group is also important because the interest and participation of not only the government, but also platform companies, content producers, creators and users is required to make a platform ecosystem of coexistence.”

He added, “as the app ecosystem is based on the global market, solidarity and cooperation between countries is also essential. The KCC plans to seek cooperation for effective responses with regulatory authorities in major countries.”
