The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) announced on April 24 that it would hold a launching ceremony of an “Association to Bring the Communications Network a Level Higher,” composed of network experts in business, academia, government and research institutes. KCC had announced at the end of January a “Medium- to Long-term Plan to Develop the Communications Network” in order to build an Ultra Broadband Convergence Network (UBcN) to meet future demand for communications service that is experienced, converged, made intelligent and private. UBcN is an ALL-IP based network of an average of 10Mbps speed for wireless and 1Gbps for wired, which is 10 times faster than now. Through the UBcN, users can use the new future service of Multiple Play Service (MPS), in which the telephone, internet and broadcasting are combined in various environments such as Service over TV (SoTV) and mobile provided with various services based on an ultra high resolution, experienced, two directional TV. Once such new services are vitalized, KCC has forecast that in the future, there would be a “living revolution” in which people’s lives are made more comfortable and efficient. Also, in a network-based society of the future, bringing up the infrastructure one level higher will bring the communications service a level higher and become a core factor in raising the overall national competitiveness in areas such as related industries, national defense, environment and culture. It emphasized that if the competitiveness of the infrastructure falls back behind, then we can’t survive in the global competition. At the launching ceremony, representatives of government and main businesses plan to discuss and make presentations on KCC’s “Medium- to Long-term Plan to Develop the Communications Network” as well as the communications network R&D plans, and the direction of UBcN of communications businesses. KCC will debate the contact measures per sector being pursued and collect various opinions from related experts. This is expected to become an opportunity to come up with a smooth cooperation system between the government and the private sector for the successful pursuit of UBcN. On the other hand, KCC announced it plans to hold an exhibition related to the “Communications Convergence Technology and Service Conference” around November and to spread the progressive ambience overall among related organizations by actively launching publicity campaigns and providing the foundation to realize the next-generation communications service. |
