The Korea Communications Commission (KCC, chairman Han Sang-hyuk) and Community Media Foundation (Chairman Jo Han-gyu) announced media education support to around 500 institutions selected by nationwide public offering. Media education means education that improves media literacy capability by supporting proper understanding and use of media, proactive participation, and creation. Media education support is a part of the government’s national agenda, Strengthening Tailored Media Education for All Stages of Life for the Entire Nation. Media education experts working for the Community Media Foundation’s 10 local centers are sent to the selected institutions. The institutions can use the centers’ facilities and tools and are provided with tailored media education classes and experience programs. The public offering took place this February and various institutions including child care centers, kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high school, and associations of the elderly, disabled, and women applied demonstrating the high demand for media education. By major sectors, 307 institutions, more than five times the number of vacancies, in the infant sector, and 419 schools, more than twice the number of vacancies, in the youth sector, including the free semester (year) system, club, and high school credit system. In particular, 12 institutions have benefited from the new category to apply of "out-of-school youth" this year. The elderly and disabled sectors have 60 vacancies and 147 institutions applied. Media is a tool that helps others and I interact beyond time and space in the digital and media era,” the chairman Han said. He added, “the KCC is going to efficiently respond to soaring demand for media education with changing broadcasting and communication environment and establish solid support system tailored for individual’s life cycle.” |
